Art Alley 2012

Art Alley was started in downtown Rapid City, between Main Street and Saint Joseph from 6th to 7th Street, in 2005. Todd Rigione and other Black Hills artists were painting the walls inside the Presidential Building when they ran out of space. Rigione suggested they continue outside. The art has evolved and changed greatly through the years since. Rebecca Johnson took these photos the first weekend in June.

Artists are there weekly, working on the walls or one of 30 canvases that Rigione supplied. -
There are no rules in the public gallery. -
"You come down and paint," Rigione says. "If you paint over somebody's stuff, so be it." -
On Thursday nights, downtown Rapid City hosts many of the Black Hills' most talented musicians and artists for Summer Nights. -
Artisans and street performers regularly gather in Art Alley as well. -
