Gov. George Mickelson and seven others died today in 1993 when their state airplane crashed on a farm in eastern Iowa. Mickelson was returning from Cincinnati, where he lobbied owners of John Morrell to keep its Sioux Falls meatpacking plant open. Over 12,000 mourners visited the governor's casket during a memorial service at the capitol, and more than 1,500 attended his funeral four days later in Brookings.
