Officers arrested at least 12 women in a raid of four Deadwood brothels today in 1980, shutting down the town's legendary prostitution ring. At the time, prostitution was not a federal offense, but against state law. Still, townspeople said they supported the brothels and hoped they would be open again by the weekend. The women were actually arrested in conjunction with a 1978 murder investigation, and they were given immunity in exchange for their testimony.
