A New Old Hotel

South Dakota's newest hotel is also one of our oldest.

Curt and Cena Bernard opened the Riverfront Hotel with a ribbon-cutting this weekend. It occupies the third floor of Yankton's historic Fantles Department Store. The Bernards have run a restaurant, bar and events center in the lower floors for several years. -
Yankton's Chamber of Commerce ambassadors gathered for the celebratory ribbon cutting. Holding the scissors are Curt Bernard and the hotel manager, Kelsey Thomas. -
Tall windows, tall ceilings and amazing birds-eye views of downtown Yankton make the rooms quite unique. -
The rooms and hallways of the Riverfront naturally have a water theme. The Missouri flows just a block away. -
An amazing stairway links the multi-floor Riverfront hotel, events center and restaurant. But you can also use the same elevator used generations ago by Fantles shoppers. It was among the first elevators installed in South Dakota. -
The Bernards and their staff have brought new life to Third and Walnut, with outdoor seating, flowers and — on weekends — beautiful brides and their wedding parties. -
This is one of several events rooms at the Riverfront. -
On busy summer afternoons, Curt powers up a little train and gives rides around the downtown streets. -
The third-floor hotel rooms offer views of Yankton's unusual architecture. -
Local musicians Eric Beringer and Mike Dooley entertained guests at the Riverfront's ribbon-cutting.
