WINNER! Whereizzit in South Dakota?

Feb 5, 2013

We have a winner in our January Whereizzit contest! Many recognized the old phone booth as a fixture on Hosmer's main street. We drew Stuart Wiederrich's name from the long list of correct guesses and we'll have an assortment of South Dakota Magazine products off in the mail to him soon.

Thanks for playing, everyone!

I made hundreds of calls from this phone booth during my early youth. The phone booth is located in Hosmer, SD, Main Street adjacent to the Hosmer State Bank and across the street from the Hosmer Municipal Liquor Store, kitty corner across from the U.S. Postoffice. I have so many fond memories of hanging out around this phone booth.

Several years ago, while wandering around in northern South Dakota, and much to my surprise there in the heart of Hosmer was this phone booth. One can only be amazzed at what can be found on the street korners and byways of our great state.

I live in Charleton SC and recognize this phone booth. My father, Frank Gisi serviced this pay phone in Hosmer SD for 40 years as an employee of Valley Telephone Coop. He is responsible for saving this vintage phone booth from being upgraded.

The phone booth is located on Main Street in Hosmer,SD. My late husband, Frank worked for the phone company for 40 years and was successful in talking his boss at Valley Telco into leaving the vintage booth where it was. And, yes, the phone still works!

As Jerome 'Doc' Malsom and other members of my family have mentioned this is (my words) 'THE FRANK GISI MEMORIAL PHONE BOOTH' on Main Street in Hosmer, SD. My late uncle Frank worked for Valley Telephone Coop headquartered in Herried for over 40 years and he kept this phone booth serviced and active for reasons only he knew. And it works to this day even though Frank passed more than 3 years ago.

This phone booth is located in Hosmer, SD on Main Street next to Farmer's State bank. This marks your turn to Heier's grocery store and Heier's Meat Market and also St John's Lutheran Church. You will notice the color is orange and the phone is black which I am sure represented the school colors orange and black for the Hosmer Tigers.

This phone booth is in Hosmer, SD and is located on the east side of the Farmers State Bank on main street. I'm sure this phone booth has helped many people out before cell phones. You don't see many phone booths around anymore but I'm glad to see that this one is still in working order and is part off history.

I believe that it is in Hosmer. I was pheasant hunting there this fall and while there tried it out. When I exited I was wearing a red cape and had a large letter "S" on my shirt. Ever since, I have been fighting crime. I'm pretty sure that it was the weekend before Oct. 31st.

This is next to the Farmers State Bank in Hosmer. I was visiting my home town this summer and walked to the grocery store to buy groceries for my parents when I think this picture was taken. One man said to the other, "Does this thing work?" The other guy said, "Yes, it is one of the only working phone booths in SD." I took the groceries home to my elderly parents and commented, "There were some fruit loops taking a picture of the phone booth!!!" To which my mother said, "No. Nobody would take a picture of that old phone booth." A few months later, I found this picture in my SD magazine.
