Richard Kneip, the last Democrat elected governor of South Dakota, was born today in 1933. A wholesale dairy equipment salesman from Salem, Kneip became a state senator in 1965 and soon became his party's leader. He defeated incumbent Frank Farrar in 1970 and served as governor until July 1978, resigning to become ambassador to Singapore. Kneip reorganized state government, oversaw the creation of a degree-granting medical school and fought unsuccessfully for a state income tax. He died in 1987.
