John Blair Smith Todd, cousin to Abraham Lincoln's wife Mary, resigned from the U.S. Army today in 1856 to become a trader in present-day South Dakota. Todd lobbied for the creation of Dakota Territory, then helped to incorporate the town of Yankton as the first territorial capital. By 1861 Todd was a lawyer in Yankton. Todd re-enlisted for a year when the Civil War began, then went to Washington D.C. to serve as territorial legislator for Dakota Territory. After a failed re-election attempt, Todd served in the territorial House of Representatives as speaker. He died in Yankton in 1872.
