Flag Day at Veterans' Memorial Park

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Allied victory in World War II and the 40th anniversary of the Vietnam War's end. Sioux Falls residents and area veterans commemorated the occasions with a special Flag Day ceremony at Veterans' Memorial Park on June 14. Photos by Scott and Marilyn Korsten. "Maid in the Shade," a World War II B-25 bomber, performed a flyover. Only about 30 of these historic 1943 bombers still exist. The plane will be at Maverick Aviation north of the Sioux Falls Airport through Friday, June 19, for tours and rides.

Veterans' Memorial Park is just north of Terrace Park on land used by the Army Air Corps during World War II. It was dedicated in 2006 to community members who have fallen in service to our country.

Marilyn and I also had the honor of accompanying a group of WWII veterans on one of the South Dakota Honor Flights to Washington DC in August 2010.
It was a two-day trip to see the WWII Memorial along with other memorials. When preparing for the trip, the organizers told us that as the days go on, the vets will get younger and we'll get older. That was certainly true.
