Too often, the most beautiful views start with a tall winding staircase. -
Though nearly a century old, the capitol's innards are clean and well-preserved. -
Rep. Susy Blake of Sioux Falls left her signature on a steel beam. -
Thousands of South Dakotans — including many well-known journalists and politicians — have left similar marks. -
A steel ladder runs to the very peak of the dome but the legislators didn't take those last steps. -
The craftsmanship of the pioneer builders is evident in the brick, stone, wood and metal "insides" of the capitol that are seldom seen. -
One of the rewards for climbing to the top is a picturesque view of Capitol Lake.
