Oahe Speedway north of Pierre holds drag racing events several times a month throughout the summer. Pairs of vehicles compete against each other down the 1/4-mile drag strip. Photos by Chad Coppess.

Each race weekend hundreds of race cars from several states and Canada visit the race track. -
Front-engined dragsters were state-of-the-art until the 1970s, but are still found racing across the country. -

Drag racing allows a huge variety of vehicle shapes and configurations to create as much speed as they can within a set of rules. Exotic-looking dragsters are nothing like vehicles driven on the streets. -

"Burnouts," where the tires spin and billow smoke, heat up both the tires and the race track for better grip as the cars launch on their run.
