Post 9/11 New York City
Sep 9, 2011
As we approach the 10th anniversary of the tragedy in New York City, our Production Manager Andrea Maibaum remembers her first trip to the big city... just 12 days after 9/11. Her graphic design club at South Dakota State University planned the trip long before the towers fell. Andrea captured these amazing photos.

Everywhere I went, there were scenes like this. This building was undergoing construction and on the scaffolding they hung flags and banners.
-
Flyers of missing family and friends filled the subways.

I took this picture in Union Square. Three replicas of the towers were surrounded by flowers, candles and notes.

More notes from the Union Square memorials.

People of all ages gathered in Union Square to reflect on 9/11.

This little boy was with his father as he asked if he could kiss it.
-
On the ground is red and white candle wax that remained from all of the candles that had been burnt.
-
This was the third replica. Each one was constructed with different materials.
-
Every day there was a new memorial that replaced the one from the day before. Everyone was welcome to share their thoughts.

Battery Park taken over by troops.
-
As I got closer to the site of 9/11, I saw this parking garage full of cars that hadn't been moved and were still covered by dust from the explosion.
-
Pedestrians were not allowed any closer to the scene than this.
