South Dakota Magazine finished its 2015 “Fair Tour” with a Labor Day weekend visit to the South Dakota State Fair in Huron. We met all sorts of interesting people. Here are just a few of them. Photos by Bernie Hunhoff.

For two generations, the Smith family has provided free parking to fair-goers at their yard just west of the fairgrounds. Mark Smith (pictured) says his dad started the tradition because he sympathized with hard-working families who had to spend money even before they reached the gates.

Joan Muller of Davis and Devin Pierce of Bemidji, Minn., teamed up on the rooster crowing division. Joan admitted to a conflict of interest with poultry calling, noting that she’s active in the pork producers association.

Sherwin Linton and his wife, Pam, thrilled country music fans with numerous performances on the Centennial Stage. They also welcomed our magazine staff to the stage for a South Dakota Quiz Bowl competition. Anyone know the longest unnavigable river in the world?
