Our November/December issue includes a story about a German cookie with a twist. Bernie Hunhoff visited a meeting of the SoDak Stamm chapter of the Germans from Russian Heritage Society to learn about the recipe. Here are some of his photos that didn’t make the magazine.

Ammonia has been used as a baking ingredient in Germany and Scandinavia for centuries. It was once made from deer antlers and acted as a leavener. -
Deb Mehrer shared her mother’s ammonia cookie recipe at the SoDak Stamm meeting. -
The group meets in an old church basement in Kaylor. -
The aroma generated by the baking cookies was very familiar to the livestock farmers in the audience. “When you get that smell in the chicken barn you clean it out,” one farmer joked.
