Northern Hills Railway Society

A dozen fellows created the Northern Hills Railway Society about 10 years ago, and since have assembled a model railroad display that is open to the public. It's located in the basement of the Lucky Nugget Gaming Hall on Main Street in Deadwood. Visit www.nhrailwaysociety.org for more information.

Admission is free and there's lots to see. If you put two quarters in a slot, the locomotives run for eight minutes. -
The train tracks are narrow gauge, patterned after the mountain railroad tracks of the Black Hills. Narrow gauge tracks could more easily maneuver the sharp turns in the canyons and valleys. -
The trains pass through dozens of little scenes, all built at the modeler's standard of l/87th scale. The Mobil Gas Station, for example, is abuzz with activity. The Deadwood display is the largest model train exhibit in the region. -
Some of the model buildings are tiny replicas of Black Hills structures, and others generally replicate the mountain towns and industries.
