The Rapid City Air Force Base, now called Ellsworth Air Force Base, was founded today in 1942. The base was the training ground for B-17 Flying Fortress crews, but its mission changed as threats facing the U.S. changed. During the Cold War, Ellsworth was equipped with bombers able to drop atomic bombs anywhere in the world within a few hours. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the base reshuffled its squadrons. Ellsworth avoided closure in 2005 and today hosts the 28th Bomb Wing, which is involved in operations around the globe.
