Harper's Weekly reported today in 1887 that only 300 buffalo roamed the wild. To stave off extinction, buffalo sanctuaries were organized by South Dakota ranchers. Soon public parks, like Wind Cave National Park and Custer State Park, and several tribes established herds. Today a number of private herds exist, as well.
