In this state of 50 million acres you might think there's not much of a creative publishing industry beyond the nuts-and-bolts newspaper industry, but you'd be wrong. South Dakota Magazine hosted a Plains Publishers' Conference on Thursday (Sept. 13) and a crowd of writers, photographers, designers and publishers showed up. Photos by Bernie Hunhoff.

They walked across Yankton's historic Meridian Bridge during a break in the roundtable discussions on how to publish great magazines. -
At the north end of the Meridian Bridge, the publishers studied Yankton's newest art exhibit — an interactive project that encourages pedestrians to ponder a big question. -
The Meridian Bridge walk is slightly more than a mile both ways. It is the longest walking bridge in the USA that connects two states. -
The publishing professionals were greeted at the Riverfront Event Center in downtown Yankton by their own cover designs, including 605 Magazine, Dainty Obsessions, Dakotafire, Living Here Magazine, South Dakota Association of Rural Water, South Dakota State Historical Society Press, Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan and others. -
Chris Amundson, editor and publisher of Nebraska Life and Colorado Life, stayed in touch with his staff during breaks. -
Katie Hunhoff of South Dakota Magazine (in red) makes a point about story-telling during the afternoon sessions. -
Staff from Sioux Falls Business Magazine, one of the region's newest publications, came to share ideas. -
The Riverfront Event Center is located in the old Fantles Department Store. The basement conference room was headquarters for the Plains Publishers' Conference. Several dozen people came, representing most of the region's monthly and bi-monthly publications. -
In the evening, the publishing conference moved to the banks of the Missouri River for continued conversations.
