Our September/October issue includes a story on Dale Lamphere’s Dignity, a 50-foot sculpture depicting a Native American woman wrapped in a star quilt. Its unveiling is scheduled for September 17 on a Missouri River bluff near Chamberlain. Bernie Hunhoff visited the Spirited Winds Tatanka Ranch near Scenic where Lamphere and a team of welders worked this summer. Over 600 classic and customized cars rolled into Deadwood last Thursday for Kool Deadwood Nights. The 20th annual event featured a car show, sock hop, car auction, parades and free concerts including a performance by Gary Lewis & the Playboys. A storm struck town late Friday afternoon, bringing wind, heavy rain and an intense pounding of quarter-sized hail. Some owners were able to find protection under a parking ramp, but dozens of cars were damaged. Heavy metal used in the construction of older cars helped to reduce destruction. Lightning sparked a fire that blazed across Crow Peak near Spearfish from June 24 into July, burning more than 2,700 acres and temporarily closing its trail. John Mitchell recently explored the popular path, much of it now running through a direct burn area. The forest service urges visitors to stay on the trail due to unstable trees.

Photographer Scott Korsten and his wife Marilyn recently brought visiting family to the Butterfly House & Marine Cove in Sioux Falls. “It was a great experience for the kids who were mesmerized by the hundreds of different free-flying butterflies found throughout the tropical conservatory,” Korsten says. “Before making our way in to the butterfly area, we spent time in the Marine Cove where we saw vibrant fish and corals.” The Cove boasts more than 10,000 gallons of aquariums and a popular pop-up dome aquarium, where kids get a unique view from “inside” the aquarium. There is also a shark and stingray touch pool and a Pacific tide pool.
