Pheasant Hunting
South Dakota’s pheasant season opened for 2008 at high noon on October 18. Some 80,000 South Dakotans and 90,000 non-residents walked corn rows and sloughs, hoping to spook up a wily ringneck.

Osprey on the Missouri
Twenty young osprey were brought to Yankton from Idaho and gradually released as part of Wings Over Water, a plan to reintroduce the birds to the Missouri River Valley.
Fort Pierre to Deadwood: Along for the Ride
The Fort Pierre Verendrye Museum led a 17-day ride along the Fort Pierre to Deadwood trail to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the trail’s closing. Greg Latza rode along and took pictures as wagons and horses traveled the historic route.

Kayaking the Missouri
Photographer and conservationist Joe Riis aims to protect the Missouri with his Nikon. The 24-year old kayaked 500 miles on the Missouri a couple of summers ago, collecting the photos into an exhibit called The Missouri River, Exposed.
Osprey Release
An Osprey Restoration Project is underway on Lake Yankton, just below Gavins Point Dam. Young ospreys from Idaho have been brought here for release. The hope is that they’ll call Yankton home for many years to come.
