Our Centennial Trail

Hikers refer to the northernmost stretch of the Centennial Trail as The Prairie Walk. The forest gives way to grasses and a view of Bear Butte.

A glorious South Dakota daybreak was illuminating a clear, still summer day. The rising sun painted a portrait of unequaled tranquility. There among the pine-clad, rolling hills and interspersed grasslands of northern Wind Cave National Park stood a mix of American bison, pronghorn antelope and ever-wary whitetail deer nonchalantly grazing. Black-tailed prairie dogs were busily scurrying about. A red-tailed hawk passed high overhead while magpies, jays and white-winged juncos noisily flitted about in their various niches.

Framed in this cacophony of sights and sounds, a majestic bull elk with a massive rack lay placidly at the center of it all.”My imagination tells me this has to be analogous to gazing out over Africa’s Serengeti Plain,” Paul whispered. The idyllic scene is a mere sampling of what awaits those who hike, mountain bike or horseback ride the 111 miles of South Dakota’s historic Centennial Trail, which first touched my heart and soul during a solo thru-hike in 1994.

Just minutes earlier, in the summer of 2007, the two of us had embarked on my second thru-hike. Honestly, not many individuals with a passion for long-distance hiking return for a repeat performance. In our view, a day or two or even a section of a long trail is never enough. Life is short and nobody is more aware of that than an aging distance hiker who, comparable to everyone else, must still juggle work and family. Before committing a precious two weeks or more to an interesting trail, one has to seriously ask,”Why re-hike an old trail previously mastered when dozens of new prospects beckon?”

That debate occurred in earnest during the winter of 2007 when Paul Kloepper, my great friend and fellow distance hiker from Hastings, Neb., approached me one evening and insisted,”Let’s do the Centennial Trail in 2007!” I promptly cut him off.”Paul, you know I did it in’94.” After much contentious discussion, he would not accept my reticence and exasperatingly pleaded,”Come on, just do it!” Eager to return to my beloved South Dakota, but reluctant to”repeat” a trail I had merely considered”OK” in 1994, my consent was begrudgingly granted. Now, back home in Florida, the recently completed eight-night, nine-day thru-hike is a fond memory.

From the southern terminus in Wind Cave National Park to the summit of Bear Butte, our south to north hike inspired in me a change of attitude. In my humble opinion, the Centennial Trail has transformed itself from being merely”OK” to being one of the finest and possibly least known long distance trails in the nation.

The Centennial Trail represents South Dakota history, geography and biodiversity at its best. The vision for the trail came in the 1980s as South Dakota leaders organized a statewide centennial celebration that culminated in 1989. Trail No. 89 was designed to represent the terrain common to western South Dakota, and the Black Hills in particular. Prairie grasslands, high granite spires, lakes and streams are readily accessible throughout its entire length thanks to multiple trailheads. Depending on time constraints or logistical necessity, explorers can thru-hike the Centennial Trail from either end, section hike or day hike any portion that attracts the individual’s interest.

Quite deservedly the multi-use Centennial Trail was designated as a”National Recreation Trail” in 1997. Embarrassingly for hikers, the Centennial Trail probably has better name recognition among major organizations that promote mountain biking and horseback trail riding. Two northern sections of the trail permit motorized ATV/dirt bikes in designated zones. All trails need supporters, and nowhere was this better exemplified than at the French Creek Horse Camp at the conclusion of our first day of hiking. We were pleasantly surprised to discover a jam-packed, festive encampment of horseback trail riders from Iowa and Illinois. The riders had traveled hundreds of miles with trailers, equipment and livestock to share a long-awaited adventure. Making conversation among that sea of smiling, hat-framed faces was easy. Two statements summed up their opinions:”We love it out here in the Black Hills,” and”Everybody always says you have to get out here (Black Hills) to ride.”

Forest Service officials consider the Black Hills to be the, “premier working, multiple use national forest in the country.”

Accolades for the stunning 13-year evolution of this trail from (my opinion)”OK” to”great” can only be credited to the multiple agencies who work in a coordinated fashion to construct, re-construct and maintain the 111 miles. Government agencies are often maligned, but we harbor nothing but gratitude and appreciation to the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service and the S.D. Department of Game, Fish and Parks. Equal credit goes to private landowners who provide access. The hard work and meticulous planning has created a gift not only to South Dakotans but to all Americans.

What has changed in 13 years? Certainly not the historical perspective summarily outlined along the entire length of the trail. Imagine the famous 1874 expedition of General George Custer literally crossing paths with the Centennial Trail near French Creek or Nemo. Who cannot smile while peering down at Grace Coolidge Creek and envisioning the local folks nocturnally stocking trout, in secret, so President Calvin Coolidge could have the satisfaction of thinking he was a master angler?

Of course, the natural beauty of the area has not changed. If anything, the environ is more captivating. Three weeks of preceding rains had transformed grasses to a spring-like green and birthed a protrusion of vibrant wildflowers. The white bark and yellow leaves of birch trees are interspersed with a splash of red in the undergrowth.

What has changed, in my view, is the subtle impression that the trail has matured. In 1994, the Centennial Trail was a relatively underdeveloped novice. Today, the trail is a valued entity.”As a designated National Recreation Trail, the trail is a forest priority to receive routine trail maintenance during the spring and summer, annually, by each of the ranger districts it crosses,” explains Rick Hudson, a recreation program manager for the U.S. Forest Service.

Unless one has end-to-ended other long trails around the country, it may be difficult to notice or appreciate the subtleties that make any trail-based experience more pleasing. Thirteen years later on the Centennial Trail, there is more and better signage. Fallen trees, rocks and debris have been cleared, and the trail bed is well delineated. Logging and thinning sites have been carefully rehabilitated, and strategic relocations have enhanced the ease of travel and now showcase awe-inspiring views that were not as easily enjoyed in 1994.

With his 33 years in the U.S. Forest Service, Hudson is justifiably proud of the Black Hills and the Centennial Trail.”The Black Hills National Forest is the premier working, multiple-use national forest in the country,” he says.”Logging, mining, grazing, hiking trails, motorized recreation, wilderness, reservoirs, recreation areas, wildlife and fishing along with some of the finest hunting in the state ó we have it all.”

At the center of these activities, in its own quiet way, the Centennial Trail provides visitors with an alluring variety of natural and historic wonders. It is an opportunity no trail enthusiast should ignore. Thankfully, I heeded the call a second time.

Bear Butte stands as an immense monolith luring us onward to its summit and the conclusion of our nine-day walk along the Centennial Trail. Not a wisp of a cloud obscures the sharp, blue-sky background on this cool, gusty day as we seek our ultimate goal at the trail’s northern terminus.

The end of the”prairie walk” portion of the trail will be marked by a sense of accomplishment, but tempered with apprehension. Why? Because the final, two-mile climb to the very crown of Bear Butte will spell the end of another brief period of personal freedom and challenge. Black, red, yellow and white prayer cloths flutter in the wind on the upslope of a mountain considered sacred by many Native American brethren. The four colors are from the Lakota’s Circle of Life, or the sacred hoop, which represents man’s spiritual bond with nature and one another.

Finally, a small wooden platform marks the zenith of our journey. Gazing to the south and west, over terrain that had been home for a fleeting nine days, I turn to my hiking partner, look him in the eye, shake his hand and simply say,”Thank you for bringing me back.”

Halverson’s Skies

Randy Halverson’s fields are his livelihood and his passion. By day he farms 1,300 acres of corn, wheat and milo in Lyman County. But when the sun sets, Halverson swaps his tractor for an arsenal of Canons and high tech gadgetry that produce stunning photos and videos of South Dakota’s night sky.

Halverson got his first camera as a teenager, and experimented with shooting passing storms and the solar system. He spent time as a storm chaser during the 1990s, photographing and licensing his images of thunderstorms and tornadoes. Then he discovered time-lapse photography.”I knew that out here there wasn’t much light pollution, so I thought it would work pretty well as long as the skies were clear,” he says.”I already had the cameras, so I thought I’d try it.”

In a time-lapse video, images are captured slowly. For example, a flower might take two hours to open, but you can watch the entire process in 15 seconds. Since Halverson works mostly at night, he incorporates long exposure photography into his time-lapse videos. A single image is exposed for 20 to 30 seconds, with two or three seconds between each exposure. To add motion, Halverson uses a dolly that slides the camera a quarter to half an inch between exposures. A typical night of shooting lasts three or four hours, leaving Halverson with up to 400 photographs to edit. And the fruits of one evening’s labor? About 10 seconds of a time-lapse video.

People began noticing Halverson’s work when he produced Sub Zero, a 2-minute, 43-second winter time-lapse video shot near his Kennebec farm during a brutal February cold snap. Wind chills plunged to 25 below zero, and Halverson had to regularly place his cameras and computer equipment in coolers filled with hand warmers to keep frost at bay and the electronics functioning. The starry sky, low wispy clouds racing across the horizon and frozen landscape, illuminated by the bright white light of a full moon, created an eerie scene.

Halverson’s time-lapse videos of the night sky became Internet sensations, appearing on wired.com because of their advanced technology and nationalgeographic.com for their natural beauty. At times, the attention nearly overwhelms the soft-spoken farmer.”I thought people might like it, but I didn’t think it would get as much attention as it has,” he says.”A lot of people are interested in time-lapse now, especially if you’re using dollies, where you can get the camera moving. A lot of people haven’t seen that before.”

The Milky Way has always been Halverson’s favorite subject. Most of the videos on his website show the galaxy as it skirts across the night sky between twisted corn stalks and above abandoned prairie homes. His 3-minute, 39-second Tempest Milky Way won Best Overall and Audience Choice at New Mexico’s 2011 Chronos Film Festival, a gathering of time-lapse, slow motion and stop motion photographers.

“I love the way the Milky Way looks,” he says,”but you don’t really get to see it this way with the naked eye.” Few South Dakotans have observed the night sky quite like Halverson. But as long as he roams his fields, camera in hand, more people will glimpse the heavens from a perspective seldom seen.

Snow Birds

The first major snowstorm of the season hit the midwest on Friday. Only a few inches were initially expected in Sioux Falls, but the city saw record snowfall by the end of the day. The previous record for November 20 was 3.8 inches in 1975. A whopping 14 inches were reported on the south side of town while northern Sioux Falls received about half as much. Christian Begeman spent a few hours at the Outdoor Campus that afternoon, observing birds stocking up at the feeders. See more of his work at cbegeman.blogspot.com.

Searching For Color

When leaves change color, our state photographers take to the highway. We figure they are our unofficial fall foliage experts, and so we asked six photographers from around the state to tell us where they head when the leaves change. The chosen drives are unexpected foliage destinations from the buttes of Harding County to the Missouri River breaks in Charles Mix County.

“There’s roadside beauty across the entire state, from the Black Hills to Sica Hollow to the Missouri River breaks, or wherever deciduous trees congregate,” says photographer Greg Latza. “But since open prairie is my favorite subject, it stands to reason that I find my favorite foliage drives there, too.”

Autumn’s brilliant colors are treasured because of their impermanence. Some years the foliage lasts only a couple of days. Others, a couple of weeks. So don’t waste time. Choose a route from this guide, grab a map and see what the day has to offer.

Vistas Along the Missouri

A six-mile stretch of Highway 44 west of the Platte-Winner Bridge over the Missouri River provides a variety of autumn colors and big vistas. Several scenic overlooks and wide shoulders on the highway make it convenient and safe for photographers to stop and get good shots of the valleys that form the Missouri River breaks.

Cottonwoods, sumacs and cedars create a colorful tapestry cascading into the river valley. The rolling hills filled with yellows, oranges and light greens remind me of Great Smoky Mountain National Park in Tennessee, but much more compact and a lot less crowded. If a photographer is lucky, wildlife can be spotted amongst the leaves as well. Deer, turkeys, vultures and more make their home here.

Prairie Pigmentation

One of my favorite drives is Highway 79 between its intersections with Highways 20 and 34. While most people are heading into the Black Hills for their colorful photos, I am usually heading in the opposite direction.

Starting from the south, the prairie colors can be framed with the Black Hills or Bear Butte as a distant background element (this photo shows Bear Butte), and the contours stay lively as you pass over at least five waterways on your way toward Slim Buttes. Then these famous buttes become the backdrop, making a nice variety of potential subjects and geological formations within a beautiful 100-mile prairie drive.

If you’re in the Black Hills with a camera and some time to kill, I couldn’t think of a finer way to spend a late September morning than heading north on this route, turning west on 20 and coming back south on Highway 85, which offers similar topography on its way back to the Hills.

Follow Nemo to Boondocks

The Black Hills are sometimes a tough place for a photographer to find fall color because we’re lacking deciduous trees except for a few groves of aspens with some birch. There are a few oaks here and there, but for the most part there isn’t a lot of color compared to other parts of the country. One of the best drives is Nemo Road from Rapid City to Boondocks restaurant (just south of Deadwood). The road follows Box Elder Creek, and besides finding some great watering holes and beautiful stretches of river, Nemo Road is full of cliffs, old barns, broken down cabins and even an old water wheel within a stone’s throw of the road.

Rapid Creek: A Complete Spectrum of Fall Color

While most folks in the Black Hills head to Spearfish Canyon each Fall, I head toward Rimrock Highway (also known as Highway 44 West). As a temporary resident of Minnesota in the’80s, I grew fond of the oak trees in autumn for their red and orange colors. After returning to the Black Hills in’91, I was always searching for those vibrant colors. I only needed to go as far as Rapid Creek. With the brilliant sumacs I found reds and oranges, and combined with the peach colors of the birch and golden yellow of the Aspen trees, my spectrum of colors was complete.

Lisa Duncan’s love for photography grew from countless trips spent in the family station wagon gazing out the windows at the hills and plains of South Dakota. She lives outside of Rapid City.

Seldom Traveled Roads

Last fall I was in Mitchell for work and we got done early, so I began to explore the James River on backroads north of town and up to Forestburg. It was a beautiful fall day and I had several hours of daylight left. I lived in Mitchell for 10 years and never really took time to explore the fall colors, even though I was often impressed by the number of trees along the James. I finally took time to do it and was rewarded with fine fall foliage views.

Badlands: Far From The Forests

Proximity to a forest would seem a prerequisite to a great fall foliage drive, but trees play second fiddle to the grasslands and sandstone buttes of South Dakota’s Badlands. Autumn’s subtle allure can be enjoyed throughout Shannon and eastern Pennington counties, but I especially recommend exploring between Highways 44 and 18. Take Hwy 33 south of Scenic past Sheep Mountain Table and descend into the White River valley, where cottonwoods, cedars and pines create a medley of color among the little bluestem and buffalograss. The foliage and few trees blend delicately with the ancient pinnacles and sand temples, especially near the milky waters of the White River, once called the Smoky Earth River by the Lakota.

Looking Up

The night heavens have been a source of mystery and intrigue for millenia. The darkness, and what it contained, puzzled even the most brilliant Greek philosophers.”Astronomy?” uttered Sophocles in about 420 B.C.”Impossible to understand and madness to investigate.” But the last 2,500 years have given us rockets and rovers to explore distant planets, cameras that float to the outer reaches of our solar system and high-powered telescopes that allow us to see the faintest galaxies hundreds of thousands of light years away.

Stars, planets and other celestial bodies have fascinated me since I was 7, when an aunt and uncle gave me an astronomy book and a star wheel that showed various constellations in different seasons. I struggled with a tiny telescope to find the images I saw in the book. But beyond the Big Dipper, Orion the Hunter and other painfully obvious constellations, the results were disappointing.

Until last summer, the closest I had come to real stargazing was when a group of friends and I sat in the middle of a Hamlin County pasture with a case of beer on a cool, late autumn evening. I remember pointing out the Seven Sisters, the only name I knew at the time for the Pleiades, a blurry cluster of stars named for Greek mythological characters. My Coors consuming friends were not impressed.

Perhaps they didn’t realize that we were peering into some of the darkest skies found in North America. In 2001 well-known astronomer John Bortle compiled his Bortle Dark-Sky Scale. Its nine categories measure the level of darkness found in the sky. A color-coded map of the United States begins with black (the darkest skies) and ends with white, which represents inner-city sky. The eastern half of the country looks like a child’s finger painting. Blobs of bright green, yellow, orange, red and white dominate. But a line cuts the country in half, roughly along Interstate 29, where the bright colors abruptly end. Much of South Dakota is plunged into dark blues, purples and an inky dab of black over the Badlands.

On a typical evening, a glowing orange dome created by thousands of artificial lights encases Sioux Falls. But just 30 miles away you can clearly spot the Milky Way. I was amazed at its clarity when I attended the South Dakota Star Party at Hodgson’s Observatory 6 miles southeast of Beresford.

Richard Hodgson taught astronomy and planetary science at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa for 30 years before retiring in 2002. He and his wife Nancy, a retired professor of archaeology at the University of South Dakota, bought their Union County farm roughly halfway between their respective schools in 1994 to create an observatory and host public gatherings.

“The Milky Way is just beautiful from this property,” Hodgson says.”It’s surrounded by bottomland which is farmed but not built on for a mile in various directions. It’s kind of like an island in the prairie. For eastern South Dakota it’s one of the better places to be.”

The Hodgsons began construction on the observatory buildings in 2003. The newest addition is the astrolodge, a small white classroom just south of their home where students and visitors first meet when touring the observatory. They get an introduction to the solar system through maps and a scale drawing. Another boxy building just four feet tall with a retractable roof houses a telescope used for solar observation. But the centerpiece is Hodgson’s 25-inch Obsession telescope (25 inches refers to the diameter of the mirror). It’s the second-largest telescope in South Dakota. Only Ron Dyvig’s 26-inch scope at his Badlands Observatory in Quinn, 6 miles east of Wall, is bigger.

Dyvig turned the tiny town’s abandoned hospital into an observatory in 2000. For years he was an avid asteroid hunter, searching outer space for Near Earth Objects on a potential collision course with Earth. During his research, he discovered 25 new asteroids in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter and three binary asteroids with small moons.

Today Dyvig’s telescope can be remotely controlled over the Internet. He’s helped students at the University of North Dakota earn master’s degrees by studying the universe through his scope. He also hopes to work with students at the University of South Dakota, South Dakota State University and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on a new research program involving supernovas.

Another representation of the solar system at Hodgson’s Observatory follows a fenceline on the southern edge of the property. This scale model is 610 feet long (one of the largest scale representations of the solar system in North America) and includes plaques noting important objects.”We pick out things that are historically important, or unusual, or quite large and command some attention,” Hodgson says.”You can’t include everything in the solar system.”

Hodgson speaks with pride as we walk along the model, particularly when we arrive at 243 Ida, an asteroid whose orbit lies between Mars and Jupiter. In 1993 as the Galileo spacecraft snapped photos on its way to Jupiter, it discovered a tiny moon, later named Dactyl, orbiting the asteroid. The discovery justified research Hodgson conducted 40 years ago.”I’d advocated the idea back in the early 1970s, that some asteroids might have satellites, and this was laughed at by the scientific community,” he says.”By the late ’70s there were a few others who thought it may be possible. But I was quite pleased that Ida came through for me.”

The late August morning dawned cloudy and rainy, but by noon the sun emerged. Amateur astronomers sweated through T-shirts as they assembled telescopes on three acres of grass that Hodgson cuts for members of the Sioux Empire Astronomy Club. John Johnson’s pickup was backed to a slab of concrete poured just for him. He was putting together his 20-inch Obsession telescope, the second-largest in use for that evening’s star party.”It’s a hobby, but some of us go a little crazier than others,” Johnson says.”I tell people that’s my Harley Davidson. I can put 350 billion light years on it and not even have to change the oil.”

John Johnson is a regular at Hodgson’s star parties. There’s even a slab of cement there for his telescope.

Johnson works at Tendaire Industries in Beresford. He caught the stargazing bug 12 years ago.”When I was a kid I had a little toy refractor that was junk,” Johnson said. I could relate.”One day in 2000 I was walking through a pawn shop and saw a nice little box. It was a 60 mm refractor with all the eyepieces and the tripod. I bought it for $45, set it up in the backyard that night and pointed it at the brightest thing I could see. It happened to be Saturn, and I almost fell over. That was it. I had the fever.”

Next came a 4.5-inch refractor. Then a 6-inch. Then 8 and 10.”They call it aperture fever,” he says.”The more and more aperture you get, the more you see.”

Visitors arrived as dusk settled over the observatory, driving into the farmyard with headlights extinguished, which is proper stargazing etiquette. Hodgson began the night with a video in the astrolodge. Then attendees rotated among the dozen telescopes, guided by red filtered lights that illuminated the ground but did not hamper night vision.

The scopes were trained on star clusters, planetary nebula, comets and galaxies millions of light years away. The Andromeda galaxy, at 2.5 million light years from Earth, is about the farthest you can see with the naked eye. It was clearly visible, but even more spectacular through the scope. We observed the faint blues of the Crab Nebula and the bright green of the Dumbbell Nebula. Just before 10 p.m., the International Space Station cruised overhead. It was visible for about 90 seconds before disappearing in the eastern sky. Visitors left around midnight and club members were left to do their own observing until sunrise.

Thousands of stars were visible with the naked eye alone from Hodgson’s Observatory, but there’s even less light pollution west of the Missouri River.”I can tell you that South Dakota, if they had a ranking system [for states with the darkest skies], would rank quite high because we just don’t have light pollution at all compared to the rest of the country,” says Dyvig, the Quinn astronomer.

Conditions are even favorable on the outskirts of Rapid City, our largest West River metropolitan area.”We have, on average, 280 to 300 clear days every year, so we probably have better sky conditions than 95 percent of the rest of the country,” says Steve Parker, director of the Hidden Valley Observatory, headquarters for the Black Hills Astronomy Club, on the northwest edge of Rapid City.

But South Dakota’s very darkest skies are found over the Badlands. Stargazers may see a faint glow from a small town or the light from a ranch, but on a moonless night you can see up to 7,500 stars with the naked eye.”For people coming from big cities, it might be the first time they’ve ever seen the Milky Way before,” says Aaron Kaye, a supervisory park ranger at Badlands National Park.”On rare occasions, maybe 12 times in the 13 years I’ve been here, you can see the Aurora borealis. No promises, but we are far enough north that if the event is big enough we can see it.”

Stargazing is a hobby anyone can enjoy, especially in South Dakota, where light pollution remains minimal. And you don’t have to spend thousands on a telescope. It turns out, standing in a field with a guidebook works just as well. Either way, take time to look up. You’ll find that stars millions of light years away have never seemed so bright.

Can We Save The Big Sioux?

YOU NEED NOT talk long with Morris Kirkegaard to understand his passion for the Big Sioux River. He and his wife, Diane, have operated the River of the Double Bend Campground and Canoe Outfitters along the river in the small Moody County town of Trent for a dozen years. But Kirkegaard has spent much of his 64 years a stone’s throw away from the Big Sioux.”In high school my friends and I spent days on the river,” he recalls.”We made a boat every summer. Then we’d forget about it during the winter and lose it in the spring flood. For me, it was the perfect place to grow up. And I want my grandson to experience some of that.”

He and his grandson share a passion for collecting fossils. Last summer, they excavated the bones of a giant ancient lizard from the Big Sioux’s muddy banks. The temperatures were below zero when we spoke in January, but there was pride in his voice when he said,”It’s winter now, so it’s very clear. You can see straight down to the bottom.”

Then, his voice trailing, he added,”But it turns like chocolate milk every spring.”

That’s a far cry from the upbeat entry that Frenchman Joseph Nicollet, exploring for the U.S. government, recorded when he first laid eyes upon the Big Sioux in July 1838. Modern-day river rats might scoff at Nicollet’s summertime description of a”stream of clear, swift-running water meandering across an immense prairie whose vegetation is better supplied and more varied and where the land seems disposed to provide all the agricultural needs for a civilized society.” Nicollet clearly observed the river’s pebbly bottom, and abundant fresh-water clams and mollusks. If any clams clung to the bottom today, they would be obscured by murky brown water or perhaps dislodged by the scrap iron that volunteers regularly fish out of the river.

Nearly 200 years of settling the Great Plains has changed the Big Sioux from the picturesque brook of Nicollet’s day into a river that advocacy group Environment America declared the 13th dirtiest river in America in 2012. But there are armies of South Dakotans who live along the Big Sioux, who use it for recreation, or who simply want to make it cleaner for their grandchildren, that are trying to fix it. The biggest question they face is whether or not their efforts are in vain. If they are, it may be time for South Dakotans to re-evaluate the ways they use the river.

The Big Sioux River begins at a pond in Roberts County, about a mile and a half north of Summit, and flows 419 miles south, through nine counties, emptying into the Missouri River at Sioux City. The river snakes through three of our five largest cities — Watertown, Brookings and Sioux Falls — making it the most heavily populated river basin in South Dakota. But most of the 5,382 square miles it drains in South Dakota, plus another 3,000 in Iowa, is agricultural land. The state Department of Environment and Natural Resources, in its biannual water quality reports, says the primary pollutants in the Big Sioux are agricultural runoff — waste from livestock grazing too closely to the river and herbicides and pesticides that trickle across the rolling East River farmland directly into the river –wildlife and wet weather discharges from small towns.

“The river we have today is a reflection of how we use the land in eastern South Dakota,” says Jay Gilbertson, manager of the East Dakota Water Development District headquartered in Brookings.”We live in an agricultural state. Sioux Falls is there, but the rest of South Dakota, and huge parts of the Big Sioux river basin, are farm ground, ranches and pasture.”

Agriculture as we know it did not exist in the Upper Plains when European explorers first established contact with the Big Sioux over 300 years ago. A map published in Paris in 1701 is one of the earliest documents to mention the Big Sioux. It shows a fur trader’s trail from the falls of the Big Sioux River to Prairie du Chien on the Mississippi River. The area was a rendezvous for Indians and French fur traders. Jean Baptiste Trudeau passed the river’s mouth in 1794 before building Pawnee House, the first trading post on the Upper Missouri, near modern day Fort Randall. Nicollet first encountered the river a few miles west of present day Brookings late on the afternoon of July 7, 1838 and followed it to its source, noting the clarity of lakes Oakwood, John, Albert and Poinsett.

The Homestead Act of 1862 brought thousands of settlers to Dakota. Through the early 1900s, they introduced domestic livestock to roam the once wild prairie and transformed other sections into a patchwork of row crops. As farming operations grew, Gilbertson says government offices and colleges encouraged farmers to build feedlots on hillsides so that spring rains would wash waste downstream to a destination out-of-sight and out-of-mind. Citizens in new towns along the river shared that mentality for their own sewage.”The assumption was that there was always going to be enough water,” Gilbertson says.”At some point, there’s no longer enough fresh water in the river to dilute the effluent that is going into it. I think people were concerned, but it wasn’t at the top of the list.”

Then the environmental movement gained traction in the 1950s, and people paid closer attention to the health of their waterways. In 1972 Congress passed the Clean Water Act, which sought to control pollution in the nation’s rivers and streams. To comply with its provisions the Big Sioux is divided into 17 segments, each with a set of prescribed uses. Pollutant levels are monitored in each section, and the state compiles a biannual report to determine the river’s compliancy with federal requirements in each segment.

The river above Sioux Falls received good marks in the 2012 report. Only two stretches — one near Lake Kampeska and another between Willow Creek and Stray Horse Creek in Codington and Hamlin counties — exceeded the maximum levels of E. coli and fecal coliform allowed under federal standards. But the river from Sioux Falls to Sioux City contains such high levels of E. coli, fecal coliform and total suspended solids that portions aren’t safe for fish or limited human contact, and swimming is prohibited along the entire route. The outlook is not sunny.”I have not seen anything in our ability to affect the kind of change that will be necessary to get within that total immersion standard,” Gilbertson says.

South Dakota is chiefly an agricultural state, but farmers should not be viewed as the lone villains behind the Big Sioux’s plight.”No one of us is responsible for a big problem, but collectively we bear the burden,” Gilbertson says.”We would all like to see a riparian corridor along the river.”

Lisa Richardson, executive director of the South Dakota Corn Growers Association, argues that farmers depend upon clean water perhaps more than anyone because it directly affects their livelihood. She says technological advances like variable rate technology, which uses satellites to map cropland, allows farmers to apply fertilizer and other chemicals more conservatively. The association had planned to hire a water quality consultant in 2012, but the prolonged drought negatively affected the organization’s budget, which relies on yields,”Water quality and water management affects every farmer out there, so we’ll continue to emphasize that,” Richardson says.

And then there’s Sioux Falls, South Dakota’s largest city, with 160,000 people. The city has had a turbulent relationship with its namesake river since being founded in 1856. Homesteaders were drawn to its signature falls, where every second 7,400 gallons of water gush down 100 feet of Sioux quartzite thought to be billions of years old. City founder Richard Pettigrew sought to harness that immense power in a flourmill, the remnants of which can still be seen at Falls Park. He also led a group of investors who established a stockyard and meat packing plant that became one of the first industrial polluters of the river when they dumped its waste directly into the water.

According to Gary Olson’s history of Sioux Falls, by 1920 businesses and many homes were connected to city sewer lines that fed waste into the Big Sioux. In especially dry summers, the amount of sewage from residences, business and the John Morrell meatpacking plant, which opened in 1909, equaled or exceeded the amount of water available to carry it away.

The city addressed that problem by building a sewage treatment plant in 1927. Still, when researchers collected river samples in 1972 for a national study, they found bacteria levels thousands of times greater than acceptable standards. The treatment plant and Morrell’s shouldered the blame.

Sioux Falls has made strides to embrace the river through its River Greenway Project in the 1970s and more recent improvements around Falls Park. But in 2010 the city was forced to dump 65 million gallons of raw and partially treated sewage into the river when heavy spring rains overwhelmed the sewer systems. And in 2011 Morrell’s was cited for three years of waste discharge violations. The city paid $10,877 in fines, and has spent millions since on sewer system upgrades. Morrell’s paid $44,079.

The Big Sioux’s pollution problems have been well known for decades, particularly to members of the South Dakota Canoe and Kayak Association. The club began in Sioux Falls in the late 1980s, but canoeists favored regular trips to West River waterways over the river running through their own territory.”It was considered a mess,” says Jarett Bies, the association’s president.”Part of the reason they went to the Cheyenne or the Grand was because it was cleaner, and there wasn’t as much agricultural runoff.”

The diminished water quality does not preclude club members today from cruising any portions of the Big Sioux, but they do take precautions.”If it’s a hot day, we don’t stop at some point and have everyone take a swim,” Bies says.”That’s something fun you can do on the Missouri River, but that’s part of the knowledge base among locals. You can use it for recreation, but I don’t think they would swim in it.”

Rather than avoid the problems, members host regular cleanups in the Big Sioux. They’ve discovered that the water is not just dirty chemically. It’s also full of garbage. Men and women walk portions of the river, pulling debris-filled canoes in their wake.”Last fall when we were working on Skunk Creek (a tributary that flows through Sioux Falls), we fished out bicycles, old air conditioners, tires, lots of metal debris,” Bies says.

So what’s the solution behind this decades-old problem? Millions of dollars have been spent on upgrades to water treatment facilities and waste management systems to little avail. Some might wonder if it’s worth the effort since we’ll never have the same river Nicollet found in 1838.”If your standard is pristine waters, you’re never going to get there,” Gilbertson says.”Things that we are doing now that we expect to do on a regular basis would have to stop. That kind of an expectation isn’t terribly realistic. We need to find a balance between making use of the land in ways that we feel is appropriate while minimizing the adverse impacts on other things that we would prefer to preserve.”

Gilbertson and other clean water advocates may have discovered a way to do just that. About 10 years ago, the East Dakota Water Development District was monitoring samples from a portion of Bachelor Creek, a tributary of the Big Sioux near Trent in Moody County. Results were mixed for years, but oddly the samples began improving. They discovered the farmer who owned pasture on both sides of the creek had enrolled the land in the Conservation Reserve Program.”Just taking a half-mile of riverbank out of constant use as a pasture led to a pretty dramatic change,” Gilbertson says.”It’s a small stream, but it can happen.”

That led to joint program between East Dakota and the Northern Prairies Land Trust to create buffer zones by enrolling land within 150 feet of the river in 30-year or perpetual easements, removing it from production. Jerry Kiihl was among the first farmers to enroll. He placed 36.5 riverfront acres about a mile south of Castlewood in a permanent easement in December 2007, and now has 75 acres protected.”The quality of the river has improved greatly,” Kiihl says.”This was a good way to protect the river environment forever. Some of the banks had eroded over time. They’ve moved 20 to 25 feet further in than they were 30 years ago.

The native grasses have started to come back. You see more big bluestem. And the grass has helped wildlife habitat. There are more ducks and pheasants.”

Kiihl has become an advocate for easements, and has helped convince several of his Hamlin County neighbors to participate. Jim Madsen, of the Northern Prairies Land Trust’s Watertown office, says 625 riverside acres are protected through easements.”We know we’re making an impact,” Madsen says.”Just how much is hard to say. Honestly, we need to create a buffer up and down the entire Big Sioux River. It’s possible, but so much depends on whether or not the funding is there.”

That’s music to the ears of river advocates like Morris Kirkegaard and Jay Gilbertson.”You can do almost anything on the other side of that buffer, and short of a major catastrophe very little of what happens is going to get into the river,” Gilbertson says.

Kirkegaard has already placed 20 acres of farmland he owns near Trent into an easement program and hopes to have 80 total acres enrolled by the end of 2013. If results further upriver hold true, swimmers might find themselves once again splashing in the Big Sioux’s southern reaches. A cleaner river would benefit the farmers living along it, kayakers who cruise it, and grandfathers and grandsons who hunt its banks for ancient sea creatures.

On Target

Editor’s Note: The NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Complex and the city of Yankton are preparing to host hundreds of archers ages 15 to 20 and their families at this summer’s Youth Archery World Championships June 6-15. Over 500 competitors from 60 countries will spend time exploring the city and perhaps the rest of southeastern South Dakota. The Yankton complex has already hosted several state and national tournaments, drawing thousands of visitors for whom Yankton was simply a dot on a map. Its experts have also trained Olympians. But how did it happen? This story from our March/April 2011 issue explains how Yankton took a shot at becoming an archery mecca — and hit the bull’s-eye.

He’s a soft-spoken, unassuming, down to earth, blue collar guy from Tyndall, South Dakota — definitely not the sort of man you’d think would be given to pipe dreams. So when Jon Straub talks about aiming at a spot on the U.S. Olympic archery team you can’t help but take him seriously.

This isn’t some passing notion, either.”My dad got me started hunting when I was pretty young, but nobody in my family bow hunted or even shot a bow,” Straub says.”Then I happened to catch an old Fred Bear film. He’s the godfather of bow hunting, and I thought, I want to do that. So I saved up and bought a bow. I shot it every day. Chased rabbits and squirrels and whatever. I’m surprised I didn’t wear it out.

“I still do some hunting with a gun, but I’d rather bow hunt. It’s more fun, and more of a challenge.” Even bow hunting has taken a back seat to Straub’s new passion, however.”I’m always in a hurry to fill my deer tag so I can get back to target shooting. I wasn’t quite as picky this year as in the past, but I still got a pretty nice five by five.”

There wasn’t much information on target archery when he started out, but the bits and pieces he came across were enough to kindle Straub’s interest. A buddy introduced him to 3-D shooting, a competition where archers shoot at life-sized figures of various animals.”I went with him and shot a few tournaments,” he says.”That was fun, but target shooting was the direction I wanted to go. I just never lived in a place where it was possible.”

That changed for Straub in 2007, thanks in no small measure to the efforts of Bruce Cull, the co-owner of Dakota Archery & Outdoor Sports in Yankton. Cull, who had long been active in the National Field Archery Association (NFAA), was elected president of the organization in 2002. The NFAA had been discussing ways to expand its operations, but was constrained by the limitations of its headquarters in Redland, Calif. Cull was in the right place at the right time to suggest South Dakota as an alternative.

At the same time, the Easton Sports Development Foundation (ESDF) was looking to establish regional centers across the country to teach and promote all aspects of archery. They came to appreciate the idea of setting up shop in conjunction with the NFAA.

Straub, who shoots daily, is able to practice for hours at a time thanks to a strap on the inside of his forearm and leather protection for his fingers.

“Bruce is a master at getting people together and organizing things,” says Ken Buhl, manager of the NFAA/ESDF facility. With Cull on point and the backing of the local business community, the city and county of Yankton came together and donated a 39-acre parcel of land on Yankton’s east side. Ground was broken in April 2007, and by that fall a 20,000 square foot structure at 800 Archery Lane was open for business. In addition to the NFAA and ESDF offices, the building houses an indoor, 20-meter shooting range and archery museum.

Elsewhere on the property are four 3-D and field courses, and a covered shooting area that opens onto a 90-meter range. The only equivalent facilities in the United States are at the Olympic training center in San Diego. There is a KOA campground adjacent to the complex, and space has been earmarked for the future placement of baseball and soccer fields.

“It was a real blessing for me when they opened this place,” says Straub with a wide grin.”I ran right down here and talked to M.J. It was awesome.”

“M.J.” is M.J. Rogers, the facility’s resident coach, and Straub was indeed fortunate to connect with him. Rogers has been coaching archers for 20 years, including five spent at the U.S. Olympic training center. He coached a Canadian archer at the 2004 games in Athens, and is currently coaching four individuals getting ready for the 2012 trials.

Virtually every Olympic-style target shooter started out as a bow-hunter, says Rogers, but from a coach’s perspective, the transition between the two isn’t necessarily smooth. Bow hunting is often a solitary activity, with long hours spent lying in wait for game; that cultivates an independent frame of mind, which can make those individuals somewhat resistant to coaching.”That’s just the nature of the beast,” Rogers says.

That has never been a problem for Straub.”Whatever M.J. tells me to do, I do it,” he says.”I know where I want to be eventually, and he can help get me there. Everything I ever learned in the past, I had to throw that out the window. This is a totally different style of shooting. It’s a process unto its own. You have to be willing to start from scratch.”

Olympic archers use recurve, rather than compound bows in competition. (World class recurve bows are high tech devices in their own right, with precision machined aluminum handles and carbon fiber arms, but they don’t have the distinctive pulleys and optical sights of compound bows.) Competition arrows are pencil thin aluminum shafts wrapped in carbon fiber, and like the bows, they are not cheap: a dozen will cost in the neighborhood of $400.

Olympic events are always held outdoors, regardless of weather conditions; the wind especially can raise havoc with competitors’ accuracy, but unless there’s lightning bolts in the sky events are never cancelled. They shoot at a distance of 70 meters (about 77 yards) at a bull’s eye 12 cm (4.75 inches) in diameter. World-class archers will average four of six arrows in that circle all the time, and unless the conditions are terrible, never miss the outer ring, which is twice that size.

It takes seven to 10 years to develop an Olympic-level archer, according to Rogers, and they must commit to training five to six days a week, four hours a day.”Physical attributes are important to a degree, but not nearly as important as mental conditioning,” he says.”Shooting an arrow is similar to a golf swing in that there’s fluidity to the movement. The more fluid that movement, the less you try to control it, the more successful you’ll be. Success comes from not trying, and that’s a very difficult component of the sport.”

Straub has embraced that training discipline wholeheartedly.”Outside of work, archery is all I do anymore,” says Straub.”I hunt a little bit, but it’s mostly archery. My whole life revolves around shooting bows in one form or another. It’s all I want to do. I never get tired of shooting every day. I wish I could shoot more.”

When he can’t get to Yankton to use the indoor range Straub shoots at a bale, with no target,”strictly to work on the feeling of the shot, on perfecting my form. Or if I’m just sitting around I’ll use a piece of rubber surgical tubing. I close my eyes and stretch it back, just to get the feel of the shot. Ideally you want to be a shooting machine, every shot the same as the last.”

Olympic archery competitions,”are raucous events, more like a basketball game than a golf match,” according to Rogers.”They hand out noisemakers, there’s cheering. It’s very noisy.” That puts a premium on discipline and the ability to focus, and those can only be developed from tournament experience.

“This year is a developmental year. I still have a lot of work to do before I’m at what I consider the upper level,” Straub says.”If M.J. thinks I’m ready I’ll get on the 70-meter range this summer. I can’t wait to compete at that range. I shot some on it last year, but I’ve come a long way since then, so I’m anxious to get out there. I’ve had a lot of coaching sessions with M.J. He’s made it all possible. If it weren’t for him I wouldn’t be thinking of the Olympics.”

Does this soft-spoken, unassuming, down to earth, blue-collar guy from Tyndall, South Dakota really think he can get there?”I don’t know many people as determined as me,” Straub says quietly.”I’ve finally got the chance to live out my dream, and I intend to make it come true.”

Why We Go Birding

I have noticed that people may not understand what I’m doing when I go birding. They sometimes think that I’m going just to look at pretty birds. That’s true, but there is more to it for birders like me.

Searching for Different Species

When migration begins, I want to see the different birds that pass through because they’re only in our area during part of the spring and fall. A bird that’s new to our area or an early arrival would be nice to see. A rare bird would be great. If a birder sees an interesting or rare bird, it is reported to an email listserv so that other birders may go see it, too. If it is indeed a rare bird, I record what I observe and try to get a photo and/or video. My detailed report goes to a committee of the state ornithological union. If they decide I was correct in my identification, it will be entered into the state birding records. It is very gratifying for a birder to find a rare bird and have the report accepted.

Adding to My List

Birders like me keep many different lists: yard, patch, town, state, year, counties and life lists. I am very list-motivated, so I enjoy searching for different birds to add. It’s like a game for birders. The South Dakota Ornithologists’ Union website lists the top birders in the state, which is another fun goal to try to achieve.

Citizen Science

I keep a list of the birds I see and note certain details: date, place, time of day, duration, species and quantity. I also note breeding codes, such as whether a bird is nest-building, on the nest, carrying food or nesting material, feeding young, etc. It is work to get this information collected and put onto the database, but it is a great feeling to help with citizen science and know that you are contributing to conservation.

Later I put all of this information onto eBird. Launched in 2002 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, eBird shares these observations with a global community of educators, land managers, ornithologists and conservation biologists. Also, eBird keeps track of birders’ lists, so that is very handy for us. At the end of each reporting season, we can have our eBird information sent directly to the state database, so it will be part of our state’s birding records as well. In this way, birders are helping science by collecting data for state and global databases.

Birding is Fun

Birding is fun whether you keep lists or just observe birds. When I go birding I get exercise while hiking, yet it is very relaxing. I see wonderful places, wild animals and beautiful wildflowers, as well as birds. I enjoy seeing the variety birds, watching their behavior and listening to them sing. Birding with other birders is also enjoyable, and it is nice to spend time with like-minded people.

While concentrating on bird songs and bird identification, my troubles and worries melt away. My husband often tells people how happy I am when I return from birding. He is right. I am so thankful that I went to my first birding festival four years ago and that I was turned on to birding. This year’s South Dakota Birding Festival at Fort Randall will be May 1-3 at Pickstown. A new gathering, the Prairie Birding Festival, will be in Mitchell on May 8-10. More information is available online. You may want to come and check out these festivals for yourself.

Birding is a fulfilling activity and is enjoyed in varying degrees by different birders. I wish everyone could get outdoors more often to experience all that nature has to offer. Until then I will do my best to get people interested, so that they can feel the same joy that I have felt.

Crawling a Cave

My friend Ken Gartzke and I were on our way to do some exploring inside one of the earth’s greatest caves — Jewel Cave. With more than 160 miles of mapped cave it ranks as the second longest in the world, and it is thought that less than 3 percent has been discovered.

It was a great day to go caving; on the ground it was windy and cold, about 15 degrees. But most caves in the Black hills remain a constant 51 degrees year-round, and the humid air feels warm — unless, of course, you sit around for very long.

Gartzke and I were experienced cavers; not only did we explore wild caves in the Black Hills, we also mapped them, thousands of feet of uncharted passageways and chimneys of various lengths and dimensions. During the early to mid 1970s, Gartzke and I explored Wind Cave. At that time the known cave contained about 50 miles of multi-dimensional passageways, chimneys and vertical descents. Wind Cave is not necessarily a pretty cave with a lot of beautiful formations like Jewel.

Today Wind Cave is recognized as the fifth-longest cave in the world, with more than 130 miles of known passageways. It is also known as the densest (most passage volume per cubic mile) cave system in the world. I describe crawling around in Wind Cave as being inside a huge sponge made of limestone, definitely not a place where you want to get lost.

Jewel and Wind are barometric caves, meaning they exhale air when the outside air pressure decreases and they inhale when the outside air pressure increases. Total cave volume is estimated by measuring the amount of air the cave exhales when the outside air pressure drops, and inhales when the outside air pressure rises. Thus, 97 percent of all the air moving out of, or into the cave represents areas yet to be explored, since we know how much air volume is contained in the mapped cave area.

Gartzke and I would be exploring with world-renowned cave explorers Herb and Jan Conn. We had been working with”Herby,” as Jan always called him, for several months in Jewel Cave, but were especially excited to be accompanying them on a crawl into Metrecal Cavern, named by Herb because of the four long arduous hours of crawling just to get into Metrecal, a huge beautiful cavern decorated with aragonite crystal. Beyond Metrecal were miles of unexplored cave.

Before starting out for Metrecal, one must first be able to successfully wiggle through test blocks outside the cave. This is to make sure a caver isn’t too big to make the four-hour belly crawl through the infamous”Miseries,” 500 yards of squirming and squeezing through a tiny passageway with an average ceiling height of only 9 inches.

Herb and Jan Conn spent decades exploring Jewel Cave and eventually wrote a book about their discoveries.

The trip from the cave entrance (known as the target room) to where the Miseries starts takes about an hour of scrambling up and over huge masses of breakdown which, over the centuries, came from large portions of the cave ceiling and walls that have collapsed onto the cave floor. Most of this breakdown occurred when water was still actively coursing through the cave passageways. Some of these piles are so large that climbing gear is needed to either climb over or rappel down.

As we climbed up and over, or around and under the never-ending piles of breakdown, we passed through rooms with names like the Delicate Arch Room, and the Humdinger, finally ending up at the Whistle Stop. Because of the huge amounts of air moving into, or out of the cave, places like the Humdinger would make an eerie humming sound, while the Whistle Stop, a small hole coming into the main passageway, would occasionally produce a low sounding whistle. Winds blowing through the Whistle Stop have measured as high as 35 mph.

The easy part of the trip was now over. There would be no more walking or crawling on our knees. We had arrived at the entrance to the Miseries. For the next four hours we crawled on our bellies with the ceiling scraping our backs.

Herb finally announced,”Around this corner and we are out of the Miseries.” With anticipation I wiggled around the corner only to find the tiny crawlway getting smaller and tighter. It dropped down at a steep angle with a very tight turn at the bottom. In order to negotiate the turn, one had to lie on as much of his side as he could so he could make the bend. This was no easy task since the ceiling was just barely high enough to accommodate part of your shoulder. Gartzke was a little bigger than me and I had to push him, while Herby pulled him from the other side until he popped through.

After taking about 10 minutes to wiggle through, sweat pouring down my dirty face, I said to Herb,”I thought we were out of the Miseries.” He smiled and replied,”Yup, we are now in the Mini-Miseries and that place you just wiggled through is called the Calorie Counter.” It was aptly named since the ceiling height at the counter has been measured at 7 1/2 inches.

We finally emerged from the Mini-Miseries into Metrecal cavern. Metrecal, as I remember, is an average size room about 300 feet from end to end and filled with amazing decorations, some of which are found in no other cave in the world. Some of the more exciting sights in Metrecal are spectacular displays of gypsum and needle crystals. Beards of angel hair drape the walls and ceiling, gently flowing with the air coursing through the room. In a nearby passageway called Wildflower Walk, gypsum flowers grow so profusely from the floor that one has to step carefully to keep from crushing them. Sadly enough, only a handful of cavers a year experience Metrecal because of the difficulty getting there and then, of course, there is only one way to go back.

Jewel Cave is filled with wondrous decorations, from gypsum beards to bottlebrushes, rare hydromagnesite balloons and huge onyx flukes. And someone who is musically inclined, as Jan Conn is, could actually play a tune on the many flow stone riblets coming off the ceiling and walls. Stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, dogtooth spar and copious amounts of popcorn crystal adorn the walls, ceiling and floor of Jewel. There are ponds of water so crystal clear and still that you will walk right into them if you aren’t paying attention. One room known as King Kong’s Cage is more than 120 feet high, while Shady Acres covers an area of several acres in size. And as Jan said,”It’s always shady there.”

Jewel Cave, besides having regular tours, also offers an”off the path spelunkers tour” for the adventuresome. There is also a candlelight tour that starts from the original cave opening and follows along the first explored portions of the cave. Only physically fit and highly experienced cavers are allowed, for obvious reasons, to venture into the beautiful, surreal world of Metrecal Cavern.

I never returned to Metrecal. My climbing experiences inside Black Hills caves led me to rock climbing in the sunshine. However, my first and only journey into Metrecal is a trip I will forever cherish in my caving memories.

A Whale Of A Mountain

Snow whales, sometimes stretching 70 feet or more, offer Black Hills snowboarders unique opportunities for adventure.

South Dakota’s highest mountain peaks are blanketed with 150 inches of snow in an average winter. That’s why Terry Peak and Deer Mountain have become two of the West’s top destinations for snowboarders.

When natural snow doesn’t fall, Terry Peak Ski Area and Mystic Miner Ski Resort on Deer Mountain create their own snow, and that makes conditions even more interesting for snowboarding.

As the machine-snow blows from a nozzle, it creates mounds called whales. Eventually the white whales are smoothed with grooming equipment to create ski runs, moguls, jumps and half-pipes that riders of waxed boards love to maneuver.

Jumps, rails and runs have been developed on Terry Peak and Deer Mountain, but it’s hard to top the whales for sheer fun in the snow.

But if you are fortunate enough to show up as the whales are being created, why wait for the groomer? Sometimes, the snowmakers will look the other way as you ride the whales.

I was at Terry Peak with my camera on a sunny winter afternoon when whales were surfacing on the slopes, and it was great fun for the snowboarders and for me.

“It seemed like it was blizzarding but it was a perfect day with blue skies,” explained Connor Haggerty, a snowboarder from Rapid City.”The whales were fun, it was like a small jump line.” A jump line, for the uninitiated, is a line of jumps for snowboard or ski stunts.

As a photographer, I was also intrigued by the unique light created by the clouds of mist enveloping from the snow machine and then kicked up by the young athletes, flipping and flying about on their colorful boards.

Terry Peak and Mystic Miner reach 7,000 feet, heady heights for snowboarders, and both lodges have developed special jumps, half-pipes, rails and other runs. Despite the Black Hills’ proclivity for snow, it’s quite common for temperatures to reach into the 20s or even the 30s in the afternoon, creating ideal conditions for fun on the slopes.

Black Hills snow-making guns can convert 1,000 gallons of water every minute into snow for skiers and snowboarders.

On the opposite side of the state, Great Bear Ski Resort in Sioux Falls also caters to snowboarders. It is considered a good place for East River residents to learn the basics before heading west to test their skills in the mountains.

Snowboarding is a winter outdoorsman’s version of skateboarding. Its invention is credited to Sherman Poppen, a Michigan engineer who strapped two skis together in 1965 to make a toy for his daughter. The sport gained widespread acceptance in the 1980s and became an Olympic competition in 1998.
